Teenage Rhinoplasty in Memphis, TN, with Dr. Langsdon
Like rhinoplasty for adults, teenage rhinoplasty (or nose job) is performed for both cosmetic and functional reasons. Facial plastic surgeons can do the surgery to change the shape and size of the nose to improve the balance and harmony of facial features. It can also be done to improve breathing when the form of the nose obstructs the nasal airway.
Rhinoplasty for teenagers is usually performed when the bones in the face have stopped growing (average age 15-16 for young women, 17-21 for young men) to make a lifelong improvement in facial appearance or nasal function. When performed for cosmetic reasons, teenage nose surgery has the potential to improve self-esteem or reduce some types of self-consciousness.
Dr. Phillip Langsdon is a leading figure in the field of facial plastic surgery. Dr. Langsdon served as president of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) in 2018-19 and is considered by many to be one of the best rhinoplasty surgeons in America.

What Are the Benefits of Teenage Rhinoplasty?
Teenage rhinoplasty can:
- correct a nasal hump
- narrow an overly wide nose
- lift a drooping nasal tip
- straighten a crooked nose
- improve an asymmetrical nose
- improve an obstructed nasal airway
By reshaping the nose and improving facial appearance at a young age, teenage nose surgery can potentially help a young person navigate the high school and college years with improved confidence in his or her appearance.
Special Considerations for Teenage Rhinoplasty
The choice to have cosmetic surgery is a significant one. When this decision is being made by a teenager, it is important that a parent or guardian be involved in the decision of whether to have this kind of surgery and to select a surgeon.
Teenagers can be overly self-critical, for example, and may find fault with aspects of their appearance that are perfectly acceptable, even uniquely beautiful. Some teenagers can also be impulsive in their actions. The decision to have plastic surgery should never be made lightly or too quickly, as it involves a change to a person’s appearance. Young people don’t have the benefit of years of life experiences and can often be more unrealistic than a more mature adult. Additionally, surgery involves risk, too, and a young person may have difficulty weighing that risk against the potential benefits of the procedure.
Finally, parents and peers can influence a teenager’s decision to have plastic surgery in ways the young person might later regret. Parental permission is required for rhinoplasty for young people under the age of 18. This usually adds another layer of consideration to the decision-making process. If the parent is against the surgery, the young person will need to wait until they are old enough to make the decision themselves. But parental influence can go the other way, too. A plastic surgeon must be attentive to the dynamic of a parent pushing their wishes on the child. The teenager should want to have the surgery for their own reasons, be free of influence by others, and should have realistic expectations for the procedure.
In terms of the procedure itself, teenage rhinoplasty is not significantly different from rhinoplasty for adults. However, we must wait to perform the procedure if the facial bones and cartilage are still growing. Some girls are able to have surgery after they are having monthly cycles and have stopped growing in height. Boys usually physically mature at a later age than girls. We usually recommend waiting for boys until they have stopped growing in height.
Rhinoplasty is the most difficult cosmetic procedure in terms of the potential complexity, detail of operation, and long term changes in the nose that can occur years later. For all of these reasons, it’s essential to choose a very experienced and skilled, facial plastic surgeon for teenage rhinoplasty.

Consultation and Planning for Your Teenage Rhinoplasty
At The Langsdon Clinic, we strive to personalize each rhinoplasty. We understand that there’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all type of nose, so our goal is to shape our patients’ noses in a way that fits their facial architecture. We create natural-looking results by considering the balance and proportion of each patient’s unique facial features.
With teenage patients, the consultation is particularly important. Dr. Langsdon takes the time to understand the patient’s goals for the procedure and to explain his recommended approach and what the procedure involves. He will ask questions of both the patient and the parent (if the patient is under 18) to make sure both are making the decision with a full understanding of the changes to be made, the expected results, and the risks. He will take the time to answer all of your questions and help you understand the realistic expectations.
In planning the procedure, Dr. Langsdon will carefully analyze the patient’s nose, looking at the shape and maturity of the nasal structures and the quality of the skin. He will only perform the procedure if the patient’s facial bones and cartilage have fully matured.
Meet Dr. Langsdon
President of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 2018
Phillip R. Langsdon, M.D. is Clinical Professor, Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis. Dr. Langsdon’s career has been limited and focused entirely on Facial Plastic Surgery and he has dedicated himself to the pursuit of excellence in his field.
What Can a Teenager Expect in the Rhinoplasty Procedure?
The rhinoplasty will be performed in The Langsdon Clinic’s ambulatory surgical center. In preparation for surgery, the patient will be given medication to help them relax, promote healing, and minimize post-operative swelling and bruising. For most patients, anesthesia is used so that the patient sleeps during the operation.
Rhinoplasty is a highly individualized procedure. The exact approach that Dr. Langsdon uses for the surgery will depend on the patient’s anatomy and goals, as determined in your consultation. Before your surgery, he will explain the details of the procedure, including:
- where the incision will be made (either inside the nose or just below the tip of the nose in the narrow ridge of skin between the nostrils)
- how the structure of the nose will be changed by removing, reducing, reshaping, repositioning, or grafting small sections of bone or cartilage
The rhinoplasty surgery takes about two to three hours for uncomplicated cases. Once the patient is alert again after sedation and anesthesia, he or she can be driven home.
What To Expect in Recovery After Teen Rhinoplasty?
We will provide you with a post-operative recovery plan customized to the unique aspects of the rhinoplasty procedure. The patient can expect some swelling, bruising, and tenderness at first. Because Dr. Langsdon does not usually use packing inside the nose, most patients are much more comfortable, have less swelling and bruising and may have more air movement through the nose compared to a nose job in which packing is used. To promote healing and minimize swelling, the patient will need to keep their head elevated for the first several days of recovery. Dr. Langsdon will prescribe medications for any potential discomfort.
The patient will need to rest at home for the first week after surgery and avoid strenuous activity for the first several weeks. Most teenage patients are able to go back to school a week after their rhinoplasty. Swelling is usually not too noticeable after a week or two, and the improvements to the nose will begin to be visible soon after the procedure. The results will continue to improve over the next few months. It can take up to a year for residual swelling to completely disappear and the final results to appear.
