Body Contouring Surgery After Massive Weight Loss in Memphis, TN with Dr. Lachica
Losing a significant amount of weight (100 pounds or more) is a huge accomplishment, but when extra weight has stretched your skin beyond its natural resilience, you can be left with loose, hanging skin where fat has disappeared. This can be both unattractive and irritating, especially if hanging skin causes chafing. Pockets of excess fat can also remain in parts of your body, even when you’re close to your ideal body weight. The good news is that body contouring surgery can tighten and smooth loose skin, reduce stubborn diet- and exercise-resistant deposits of fat, and improve the shape of the underlying support tissue.
If you’ve made great progress in improving your health by losing a large amount of weight but are unhappy with your appearance because of loose, hanging skin, body contouring surgery after weight loss can help complete your transformation.
To learn more about body contouring surgery after massive weight loss and how it might benefit you, contact The Langsdon Clinic today to schedule a consultation with Dr. Roberto Lachica. Dr. Lachica is a board-certified aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon with more than 20 years of experience performing individualized aesthetic procedures.
What Surgical Procedures Are Beneficial after Significant Weight Loss?
Each body responds in unique ways to massive weight loss. Some parts of your body may look great, while other parts may bother you because of loose skin or bulges of stubborn fat. Your arms and legs may be fine, for example, while your abdomen and lower back may have folds or drooping skin. Or it might be the skin on your arms, legs, or buttocks that has stretched and sagged. Muscles in the abdomen can be stretched and weakened with excess weight and may need surgical repair after weight loss. Surgery after massive weight loss typically involves a combination of procedures, customized to your specific need.
Surgery after massive weight loss can include:
Breast lift (mastopexy) — to raise and reshape sagging, flat breasts.
Breast augmentation — to increase the size and enhance the shape of your breasts, usually using silicone gel implants.
Breast reduction — to reduce the size of your breasts.
Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) — to flatten and smooth your abdomen and pull in your waist by removing excess skin and fat and tightening and repairing stretched abdominal muscles.
Panniculectomy — to remove overhanging skin in your lower abdomen, below the belly button.
Upper arm lift (brachioplasty) — to remove excess skin and fat from the upper arms to give the upper body slimmer, firmer, and more toned contours.
Upper arm lift (brachioplasty) — to remove excess skin and fat from the upper arms to give the upper body slimmer, firmer, and more toned contours.
Thigh lift (thighplasty)— to remove excess skin and fat from the inner or outer thighs.
Buttock lift — to raise and reshape the contours of the buttocks by removing excess skin and repositioning underlying tissue.
Back lift — to tighten sagging skin on the back or eliminate rolls of fat around the edges of your lower back.
Liposuction — to remove discrete areas of excess fat wherever it has accumulated, including the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, upper arms, chin, or neck. Liposuction may be performed as part of a surgical procedure to tighten sagging skin to remove fat and contour your body.
Facelift — to correct sagging and jowls in the lower face, smooth lines and wrinkles, and restore a younger appearance.
In your consultation with Dr. Lachica, he will examine you to assess the extent of your skin laxity and the nature of any excess fat, ask questions to understand your hopes for treatment, and recommend the combination of procedures or treatments that he thinks will be most beneficial.
If Dr. Lachica determines that you can benefit from more than one surgical procedure, he will explain whether these can be performed at the same time or if a sequence of procedures will be required. In making these recommendations, he will prioritize your health and safety above all else.

Why Consider Body Contouring Surgery After Massive Weight Loss?
When you gain weight, your skin stretches to fit your changed contours. If your weight gain is significant, your skin can stretch beyond its natural ability to retighten itself with weight loss. When you lose a massive amount of weight—100 pounds or more—you can be left with drooping folds of hanging skin. If you’re bothered by the appearance of sagging skin after significant weight loss, discomfort from the chafing of hanging skin, or remaining pockets of fat, body contouring surgery may be able to help you achieve the body you want.
Body contouring surgery after massive weight loss can:
- Eliminate droopy, hanging skin on the belly, waist, back, arms, thighs, or buttocks
- Correct problems with chafing caused by hanging skin
- Flatten, firm, and smooth the abdomen
- Rejuvenate rounder, more uplifted breasts, in a size in proportion with other features
- Reduce unwanted fat bulges
- Restore pride in your body
- Allow you to wear the clothes you prefer

Am I a Good Candidate for Body Contouring Surgery after Massive Weight Loss?
Your body contouring surgery will be performed in The Langsdon Clinic’s ambulatory surgical center under general anesthesia.
Dr. Lachica will review the details of your surgery as part of your consultation and preparation conversations. He will provide clear instructions on how to prepare for your surgery and recovery, depending on the combination of procedures you have.
Once you are awake from anesthesia, a trusted friend or family member can drive you home. We recommend that you have someone at home with you for the first 24 hours.
What Can I Expect in Recovery?
We will provide you with a post-operative recovery plan customized to the unique aspects of your body contouring procedure. You can expect some swelling, bruising, and soreness at first. You may be fitted with compression garments to minimize swelling and promote healing. Dr. Langsdon will prescribe pain medication to help with any short-term discomfort.
You will need to rest at home for the first week after surgery and avoid strenuous activities for three to six weeks. If you are having abdominal surgery, you will need to avoid bending and lifting anything heavy (including children). Surgery on your thighs, arms, breasts, buttocks, or back will involve similar restrictions during recovery. We recommend that you arrange for friends or family members to help you with household tasks in this first stage of your recovery.
The final results of your body contouring surgery will appear gradually as the post-surgical swelling resolves. You can expect to look and feel great three to four months after your surgery.
