What to Expect During Your Plastic Surgery Consultation
During a consultation at The Langsdon Clinic we discuss your desires, examine the condition you wish to have improved, and provide you with an idea of what we believe might or might not be able to be accomplished in your particular situation.
This two-way dialogue helps you answer key questions:
- Is cosmetic surgery right for me?
- What are the realistic possibilities?
- Which procedure(s) would be most appropriate?
Here’s a step-by-step guide to what your plastic surgery consultation will typically involve, and how it can help you make the best decisions for your personal transformation:
1. Check-In with the Front Office
Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by the front desk staff. If you’ve completed any paperwork ahead of time, they’ll collect it and make a copy of your driver’s license. If you haven’t completed the paperwork prior to arrival, it will need to be completed prior to seeing the doctor.
2. Meet with a Medical Staff Member
Once in the Consultation room, you’ll meet with a medical staff member who will take your photos and review your medical history. It’s important for your health and safety to be thorough and complete about your medical background, including any medications or supplements you’re taking. Sometimes omitting something as seemingly innocuous as taking aspirin can have serious consequences during surgery.
3. Consultation with the Plastic Surgeon
Now it’s time to meet your surgeon. During this meeting, expect to discuss:
- The changes you want to make and why
- How you feel about your appearance now and what you hope to achieve
- Specific goals for surgery and which procedures might help you achieve them
- What the realistic results might be
- The surgical process, including anesthesia, recovery, and potential risks
- Your medical history in detail
Your surgeon will answer any questions you have about his/her experience as well as proposed the procedure itself.
4. Physical Examination
After your discussion, the surgeon will examine the areas you’re considering for surgery. You’ll typically remain in your clothes unless the exam involves body or breast areas, in which case you’ll change into a robe. Your nurse will stay in the room during the exam.
5. Meet with the Surgery Coordinator
Your surgery coordinator will guide you through the next steps, from scheduling appointments to answering any questions about the procedure. The surgical coordinator is your point of contact throughout the process, ensuring you have a smooth experience from consultation to treatment, to post treatment followup.
6. Discuss Pricing and Payment Options
At the end of your consultation, you’ll receive a detailed price quote that contains:
- Surgeon’s fees
- Operating room costs
- Anesthesia costs
- Any additional materials like implants or garments
7. Next Steps
Before you leave, the staff will explain your next steps. If you’re ready to schedule surgery, great! But don’t feel pressured to decide immediately. Take your time to consider your options, and when you’re ready, your surgery coordinator will assist with the scheduling process.
8. Follow-Up, If Needed
It’s common for new questions to arise after your initial consultation. Don’t hesitate to call with any concerns.
