Lip Implants or Fillers? Which One Is Right for You?
The primary goal for most who are interested in lip augmentation is to increase tissue volume. Because of all the incredible steps forward in cosmetic facial surgery and injectable treatments, there are many different approaches to increasing lip volume, and there are pros and cons of each depending on your treatment goals.
The Perma Lip Implant® is a quick procedure we use to increase lip volume permanently. These implants are made of soft, non fluid silicone, so they cannot rupture or losing volume. Lip implant placement can be performed by a licensed facial plastic surgeon in a quick office visit.
Lip implants are surgically inserted under topical and local anesthesia, in our clinic procedure room.
Injectable facial fillers are also used to non-surgically enhance lip volume. Dermal fillers can be injected directly into your lips and in the areas around the mouth to make your beautiful lips stand out naturally. Most dermal fillers used to enhance lip volume are based around the active ingredient hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a substance found naturally in your body. The key to having beautiful and natural looking lips is having someone with a high level of experience provide the treatment. What Are the Benefits of Lip Implants?
Compared to injectable lip fillers, implants have the primary benefit of being permanent. Because the cost of the procedure is usually a one-time fee, it also has the benefit of typically being less expensive than lip injectables in the long term.
In addition to the permanent results and cost benefits, many patients choose lip implants over fillers because a facial plastic surgeon can better shape the pink portion of your lip. Different silicone implants are selected based upon patient requests and measurements that we take during your examination. With injectables, the results and appearance will change slightly over time, and your results will periodically need to be adjusted with future appointments. However, injectables can be placed in areas of the lip that a permanent implant cannot improve.
What Are the Benefits of Injectable Lip Fillers?
One of the main reasons many of our patients choose dermal fillers to enhance volume is that little downtime is needed after an appointment. Many patients can get in and out of an injectable appointment in less than 45 minutes, whereas your time commitment with a lip implant placement may take more than one visit for some planning, ordering the correct size and a small outpatient procedure. Many lip filler patients can immediately return to their daily activities. Comparatively, lip implant surgery patients may have some swelling that lasts a few days longer than a more simple lip injection.
Juvéderm® and Restylane® are two of the most common fillers we use at The Langsdon Clinic to enhance lip volume. For Juvéderm, we use the renowned Vollure XC, and Volbella XC formulations; for Restylane, we have commonly used the Refyne, Defyne, Lyft, and Silk fillers.
Dermal fillers are FDA approved and, although not permanent like lip implants, the results may last from six to 18 months, depending on which product is used and the location in which it’s applied.

How Much Does a Lip Augmentation Cost?
Costs associated with a lip augmentation will vary for each patient. The materials and methods used to enhance your lips and areas around your mouth will determine the costs. Each patient has different wishes and goals. Therefore, the amount of volume you wish to add will determine how much filler is needed.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Lip Augmentation?
During your lip augmentation consultation, we’ll ask some questions about your medical history. Good candidates for lip augmentation should be in good overall health. Risks to be concerned about are:

- Issues with bleeding or blood clotting

Lip Reduction
A lip reduction is often performed on people who are concerned their lips are too large or bulky. This procedure is usually performed in our outpatient surgical center under “twilight” sedation, supplemented with local anesthesia. First, an incision is made on the inside portion of the upper and/or lower lip. Once the incision is made, a section of tissue is removed from the lips. To finish the procedure, the edge of the incision is advanced inward and closed with an absorbable suture.
After your lip reduction procedure, there is some swelling and possibly some discoloration. Recovery usually lasts around fourteen days, which is when most of the swelling and discoloration usually reabsorbs. The final amounts of swelling and firmness in the lips may take longer to resolve. As with any surgery, the complete healing process may take up to a year. At The Langsdon Clinic, we recommend to be patient with your body during the healing process in order to appreciate the final result of your lip reduction.

Memphis Lip Augmentation FAQs
The natural material used for injectable lip augmentation is gradually reabsorbed by the body over a period of several months. The results typically disappear between 6 and 12 months after treatment. If you are pleased with your results in the first weeks after treatment, you can maintain that look by scheduling refresher treatments every 4 to 6 months.
The results of lip augmentation with implants are permanent. The Perma Lip Implant® we use is made of soft, non-fluid silicone, so will never rupture or lose volume.
You’ll see the results of injectable lip fillers immediately. Your lips will likely look slightly over-full for the first few days as your tissue reacts to the injections with some short-term swelling. That swelling will subside quickly and you’ll see the final results in about a week.
Post-surgical swelling can take slightly longer to subside after lip implants are placed. As with injections, you’ll see the enhancement right away, but your lips may appear over-full for the first week or so before gradually settling into the final results.
At The Langsdon Clinic, we always strive for natural-looking results. When providing injectable treatments, we recommend a conservative approach, starting with a modest enhancement so you can see how it looks. That way we can add more filler in a second treatment, if needed. An overly aggressive approach can result in lips that look swollen and unnatural, which is not what most people are seeking.
When planning lip augmentation with implants, we are always careful to choose an implant of size and shape that will give you attractive and subtly enhanced lips.
Yes. Sometimes enhancement is wanted for just the upper or lower lip, not both. We can enhance both lips or just one, depending on the natural shape of your lips and your wishes. We are always careful, when just the upper or lower lip is being augmented, to make a subtle change so your lips look natural.
Lip augmentation with implants is reversible if you are unhappy with the results or if you later decide to go back to your original lip appearance. The implants can be surgically removed.
The results of lip augmentation with injectable fillers will slowly and naturally reverse over a period of a few months. It may be possible to speed up that gradual reversal by injecting a substance that dissolves the filler.
Injectable treatments are offered by a wide range of practitioners. Be aware that not all of them are sensitive to the subtleties or facial aesthetics, or even fully trained.
