Forehead Reduction | Hairline Lowering in Memphis, TN, with Dr. Langsdon
Some female patients come to the Langsdon Clinic because they have a high hairline or tall forehead that causes the face to look out of proportion. Forehead reduction, or hairline-lowering surgery, pulls a high hairline down and reduces the height of the forehead, helping to reduce forehead prominence. This can help restore more attractive facial proportions.
Dr. Langsdon is an expert at forehead reduction surgery. Few doctors are proficient with this procedure, but Dr. Langsdon is a specialist in facial plastic surgery and has years of experience in hairline lowering procedures.
Dr. Phillip Langsdon is a leading figure in the field of facial plastic surgery. He has developed improved facial surgery techniques to create more natural-looking results.
Dr. Langsdon served as president of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) in 2018-2019 and is considered by many to be one of the best cosmetic facial surgeons in America.

How Is Forehead Reduction Surgery Performed?
An incision is made at the frontal hairline. The incision is beveled to allow the opportunity for some hairs to grow through the incision line after healing. Dr. Langsdon will free up the hair-bearing scalp and advance it forward, while removing the non-hair-bearing forehead skin. This usually results in a nicely lowered hairline.
The procedure may lower the hairline as little as a quarter of an inch or as much as two inches. The amount depends upon how much reduction is desired and the flexibility of the scalp. During the initial consultation examination, Dr. Langsdon will be able to give you an idea of how much hairline-lowering might be achieved.
What Can I Expect in My Forehead Reduction | Hairline Lowering Procedure?
Your procedure will be performed in The Langsdon Clinic’s ambulatory surgical center. During the procedure, you will be under twilight anesthesia and unaware of the treatment.
Forehead reduction or hairline lowering surgery takes about one and a half to two hours to perform.
Once you are alert again after your sedation, a trusted friend or family member can drive you home.

What Can I Expect in Recovery?
We will provide you with a post-operative recovery plan customized to the unique aspects of your procedure. You can expect some mild swelling and perhaps some bruising, depending upon your normal tendency toward swelling, etc. Dr. Langsdon will prescribe medication to help with any short-term discomfort, which is normally very mild. Patients are often numb for several weeks to months.
To promote healing and minimize swelling, you will need to keep your head elevated for at least the first two weeks. You can sleep on an inclined pillow, in a reclining chair, or propped up by multiple pillows. You will also need to avoid strenuous activity for the first week after surgery.
Most patients can appear in public after several days and may resume most non strenuous activities after about a week.
The scar from the procedure, which is concealed at and behind the hairline, will appear darker and redder at first, then it will gradually lighten. The incision is designed to allow the hair the opportunity to gradually grow through the skin where the incision is placed. You may choose to style your hair over the incision line.
