Ethnic Rhinoplasty in Memphis, TN, with Dr. Langsdon
One’s ethnicity and heritage are central to an individual’s identity. Your unique beauty shines in the harmony of your features — the tone of your skin, the shape and color of your eyes, the form of your lips, and the structure of your nose. Plastic surgery can enhance your appearance, but only if performed with respect for your ethnicity and sensitivity to the wide range of characteristics that can combine to make a face attractive.
Ethnic rhinoplasty is an approach to cosmetic surgery of the nose that works to bring out a person’s natural beauty rather than creating a “one size fits all” nose job.
Rather than applying the same methods for everyone, ethnic rhinoplasty is tailored to the appearance, heritage, and identity of the individual in order to help one look more attractive naturally and harmoniously.
Dr. Phillip Langsdon is a leading figure in the field of facial plastic surgery. He has developed improved techniques for rhinoplasty and has long experience in customizing nose surgery to the unique features of his patients. Dr. Langsdon served as president of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) in 2018-19 and is considered by many to be one of the best rhinoplasty surgeons in America.

What Is Ethnic Rhinoplasty?
Ethnic rhinoplasty is cosmetic surgery to enhance the appearance of non-Caucasian faces by modifying the nose to be in better harmony with other facial features. While the surgical methods are very similar to standard rhinoplasty, ethnic rhinoplasty breaks free of the narrow concept of a single standard of beauty, customizing the procedure to bring out the best in each patient’s face.
Why Might I Consider Ethnic Rhinoplasty?
You might consider ethnic rhinoplasty if you are unhappy with the appearance of your nose or have suffered an injury and want to make an enhancement or correction that honors your natural ethnic traits.
Ethnic rhinoplasty can:
- Bring the proportions of your nose—in length, width, or projection—into harmony with your other facial features
- Improve Tip or Bridge deviation if your nose is crooked or off-center
- Improve or Enhance the Shape of your nose if too small or large
- Correct structural defects that cause breathing problems
If you have considered rhinoplasty but put it off out of concern that a surgeon might change your appearance in an unnatural way, one that doesn’t honor your ethnicity, schedule a consultation with Dr. Langsdon. He will explain his customized approach to rhinoplasty, consult with you on how you’d like to change your nose, and answer your questions.

Why Choose Dr. Langsdon as My Memphis Ethnic Rhinoplasty Surgeon?
To perform ethnic rhinoplasty, a plastic surgeon must have a deep understanding of the range of natural beauty in faces of different ethnicities—the harmony among the features that makes a wide variety of faces attractive. The surgeon must also understand the structural differences among Caucasian, African American, Asian, Indigenous, Middle Eastern, and mixed-race noses. Ethnicity and racial background affect not just the appearance of the nose but its underlying bone and cartilage structure as well. Different skin tones and thickness can sometimes enhance and sometimes limit the possibilities and can also have greater or lesser propensities to visible scarring, a consideration that a skilled surgeon will factor into planning and performing the procedure.
Dr. Langsdon is a pioneer in rhinoplasty surgery and is considered by many to be one of the best rhinoplasty surgeons in America. Through his work with the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, which he led as president in 2018-19, he has organized and overseen the organization’s medical education programs and was director of the Foundation of Facial Aesthetic Surgery’s continuing medical education programs that trained doctors in rhinoplasty for over two and a half decades. He has published his innovations in surgical technique, taught young doctors specializing in facial plastic surgery, and led special rhinoplasty training programs for experienced plastic surgeons.
Dr. Langsdon’s expertise and innovations are all focused on one overriding goal: to produce beautifully natural-looking results for his patients. Consultation and Planning for Your Ethnic Rhinoplasty
At The Langsdon Clinic, we strive to personalize each rhinoplasty so that the patient can achieve the best improvement possible with their individual characteristics. We understand that there’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all type of nose, so our goal is to shape our patients’ noses in a way that fits their facial architecture. We create natural-looking results by striving to create balanced and proportional results to the patient’s unique facial features.
Dr. Langsdon takes multiple factors into account when planning his rhinoplasty. Before your rhinoplasty, Dr. Langsdon will carefully analyze your nose to look at the shape and characteristics of your nasal structures and the quality and type of your skin. He will ask you questions to understand your goals for the procedure. Based on his analysis and an understanding of your goals, Dr. Langsdon will recommend an approach and explain what you can realistically expect from the procedure. In your consultation, he will take the time to answer all your questions.

What Can I Expect in My Ethnic Rhinoplasty Procedure?
Your rhinoplasty will be performed in The Langsdon Clinic’s ambulatory surgical center. In preparation for surgery, you will be given medication to help you relax, promote healing, and minimize post-operative swelling and bruising. Then, anesthesia is used so that you are sleeping during the procedure.
Rhinoplasty is a highly individualized procedure. The exact approach that Dr. Langsdon uses for your surgery will depend on your anatomy and your goals, as determined in your consultation. Before your surgery, he will explain the details of the procedure, including:
- where the incision will be made (either inside the nose or just below the tip of the nose in the narrow ridge of skin between the nostrils)
- how the structure of the nose might be changed by removing, reducing, reshaping, repositioning, or grafting bone or cartilage
The rhinoplasty surgery usually takes about one to three hours for uncomplicated cases. Once you are alert again after your sedation and anesthesia, a trusted friend or family member can drive you home.
What Can I Expect in Recovery After Ethnic Rhinoplasty?
We will provide you with a post-operative recovery plan customized to the unique aspects of your rhinoplasty procedure. You can expect some swelling, bruising, and tenderness at first, but Dr. Langsdon will prescribe medication to help you remain as comfortable as possible. Most patients state they have minimal discomfort and need little medication. To promote healing and minimize swelling, you will need to keep your head elevated during the healing process.
You will need to rest at home for the first week after surgery and avoid strenuous activity for the first few weeks. No excessive exertion is allowed for 4 weeks. Most patients are able to go back to office work or school a week after their rhinoplasty; depending on your individual healing time and how quickly an individual’s swelling subsides. Most of the early swelling will subside after a week or two, but there is usually residual swelling that will take some time. Your results will continue to improve over the next few months, and it can take up to a year for residual swelling to disappear completely.
